Some might be surprised to learn that none of the founding fathers would have been able to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. This is because the Pledge of Allegiance wasn’t invented until 1885 – over 100 years after the United States declared itself a sovereign nation. The tale of the inception of the Pledge of Allegiance is an interesting one.
The story goes that a veteran from the U.S. Civil War named Colonel George Balch first started the saying, “We give our heads and our hearts to God and our country; one country, one language, one flag.” Believe it or not, this was the first iteration of the Pledge of Allegiance. This Pledge soon began to circulate around local schools; however, it wasn’t until June 22, 1942 that the Pledge of Allegiance was officially adopted into the U.S. Constitution.
The pledge of allegiance has changed forms several times since Balch’s original version in 1885. The first change was by far the most substantial. It came in 1892 when former Baptist minister Francis Bellamy was commissioned to make an update to the Pledge. Bellamy’s version brought it much closer to its current form. His pledge read, “I pledge allegiance to my flag and the republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
In 1942 Congress finally adopted the Pledge of Allegiance into the Constitution with the ordinance that during its recitation service members should salute the flag while citizens should put their right hand over their hearts and recite the Pledge.
